Dark Playlist Suggestions?

I'm starting a new WiP.  It's dark.  And I'm interested in your suggestions for dark, sort of intense music for a playlist (whiny emo is not invited, lol).

The WiP I've been working on has me somewhat flummoxed.  As in... it is plotted and I have rewritten the beginning 85 times.  Ok, not 85, but it feels like 85.  And ya know what?  I need a break.  I've been tinkering with this one since January 2010 and as much as I feel like there is a really good story there, I don't know.  Something just isn't working.  Part of me knows that I don't have enough time to devote to any WiP and that's probably a big part of my problem.  Time is a big struggle for me - I work full time and also bring work home, I have a preschooler and an 8 yr old that I want to spend time with, and a hubby I'm pretty fond of. :)  Lately we've been hit with illnesses and major amounts of play rehearsals.  Next up is report cards.  It never really ends. :)

But I'm not really here to complain about time - time is a struggle we all have.  I guess I'm getting tired of struggling with the same story for over a year.  So I'm trying something new.  And my new story has a darker voice.  Which is where YOUR music suggestions come in!

If interested in photo credit, please contact me - I Googled my story topic and found this
pic but the site is kind of gory for general consumption.

What do you listen to when you are in a dark, intense mood?  Or to put you there for your writing?

Well, if you are open to gothic rock sounds, I'd recommend some Lacuna Coil, esp. their earlier stuff. The album "Unleashed Memories" is an absolute stunner, with amazing songs like "Wave of Anguish", "Cold Heritage", "Distant Sun", "A Current Obsession" and "Senzafine". They also have other incredible songs like "Falling Again" (and the acoustic version from their EP, "Falling"), "Comalies" and some great b-sides like "Without A Reason" and "Virtual Environment". I COULD go on but I think I'll take a breather. Only to move onto other bands...hehe

HIM's song "Sleepwalking Past Hope" is an epic must. Check it out!

One of my fave bands is Type O Negative, they're doom metal. ;) "Love You To Death" is a pretty song by them.

There are also quieter bands I'd recommend, like the French band Artesia. Very haunting but beautiful stuff!

And Also The Trees (who are gothic, new wave, 80s...) is a band I discovered a few years back, I recommend their songs "Tremaine", "Roulette", "Domed" and "Under the Stars".

Wow, thanks, Trisha! :) I really appreciate all your suggestions. I will definitely check them out. I am pretty open to anything musically (ok, besides whiny emo).

I like 'Crush' by Garbage from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, quiet grungy and dark but good sound. Or you could go right out for Alice Cooper's weird song that something about 'the one that got away' (about a serial killer's victim that got away). And there's always the Dexter theme song :-)

Try Bartok's Romanian Dances. Beautiful, but creepy.

Thanks, Charmaine and Connie! I am excited to have some great creepy music to look into... just what I need! :)

Okay. I'm a mortician and I've convinced numerous mourners to choose the song "My Immortal", by Evanescence. It is dark, and emotional, and sad. Your chosen picture is a perfect fit for this song. When I listen to the lyrics, I know without a doubt that I would choose that song if, heaven forbid, I lost a child.

Hmm...dark playlist. Maybe try Three Days Grace's Life Starts Now album. Flyleaf's latest album. Breaking Benjamin is very emotional-type, but not whiny. My favorite band in the entire world is Senses Fail. They mostly write lyrics that talk of suicide (not sure if that's the kind of dark you're interested in) or being so lost in the world you need medication. I like Florence + The Machine's "Heavy in Your Arms". I can go on and on. Hope this helps!

Ughh. I can be of no music help to you. Sorry. I understand your WIP woes, though. I had the same problem (especially with rewriting the beginning 85 times, and I don't even think it's an exaggeration for me). I got 60% through a second novel and now I've nearly finished my rewrite of the one I abandoned. You'll end up with two in the end and be much happier with both. I think moving on is the best thing to do. Best of luck with your musical inspiration! christy (love the new blog look. didn't feel lost. ours is due for a revamp also...when we get some time!)

I usually opt for an ambient tune by Sigur Ros or I hunt down soundtracks for dark movies I enjoyed. That's how I got the soundtrack for my novel. I used The Ring and The Grudge soundtrack. super creepy, very effective. good luck!!

Thanks, Kelly & LV Writer! I am writing all of these suggestions down.

Christy - I think you are completely right. I still love the story and have done a TON of work and research on it. I think there is something worthwhile there but I need some distance from it. Moving on and going back afterward is what I plan to do. :) Glad it worked for you!

Hannah - Thanks for the idea, I hadn't thought to try horror movie soundtracks. I knew our resident horror chick would come through! ;)

I'm sure I could add more once I'm at home and looking at last year's NaNo playlist :D It was very doomy and dark indeed. ;)

"My Immortal" is indeed a good one. Also "Hello" by Evanescence is a nice quiet depressing one. ;)

Oh oh oh, if you like dance music, VNV Nation are cool - and depressing! I recommend "Darkangel (Gabriel)" and "Standing", two very beautiful haunty songs.

i hope i'm not repeating above comments! i'm in a rush tonight!
how about the soundtrack to pan's labyrnth, breaking benjamin is inspirational for me for darker pieces... um we are the fallen has some great dark and bittersweet songs... theory of a deadman... wish i had more off the top of my head! but it looks like there are lots of suggestions in these comments! :) wishing you tons of inspiration!

Let me second Pant's labyrnth and second Romeo and Julie soundtrack - they did two soundtracks for that movie and there are a few songs from each that I'd recommend. I LOVE soundtracks. That's always a good starting place. Maybe find a few movies that are the mood and work from there...

Good luck to ya..

Also, your pic of your husband almost made me snort soda out my nose. In a good way :) If that even makes sense...
maybe I should have just said you made me laugh and sounded less weird.

Oh wow, good question. I would say Within Temptation is an intense one that I listen to sometimes. Other favs for dark moods would be We Are the Fallen and some skillet, although sometimes Skillet is more uplifting than depressing. Hmm... :)
I hope your playlist is going well!

I'm back.... with a rather long list. I promise this is the last you will hear from me :D

First off, wow, I forgot to mention "Into Dust" by Mazzy Star. Beautiful, quiet, HELLA haunting. ;)

Others on my NaNo playlist (yes, I'm at home now) that I would like to note are:

"Angels of the Bowling Green" - Augie March
"Appels + Oranjes" - the Smashing Pumpkins
"Waiting" - the Smashing Pumpkins
"Broken Bridge" - Daughter Darling
"Cold Piece" - Jerry Cantrell
"Creepy Green Light" - Type O Negative

"Daphne Descends" - the Smashing Pumpkins
"The Darkest Night of All" - Lisa Germano
"Decode" - Paramore
"Everything Fades Away" - Mariah Carey (yes, I have eclectic taste :P)
and while I remember it, "The Wind" - Mariah Carey - this one is about a funeral!
"Exhausted" - Foo Fighters
"Eye" - the Smashing Pumpkins
"Falling Snow" - Agalloch
"Flames" - VAST
"Fool" - Darkpop - can get this free online too
"Growing Old is Getting Old" - Silversun Pickups
and while I remember it "Rusted Wheel" - Silversun Pickups
"Guillotine" by Lisa Germano
"I Think I Lost My Headache" - Queens of the Stone Age

"6 Underground (Two Lone Swordsmen Instrumental Mix)" - Sneaker Pimps
"6 Underground" - Sneaker Pimps

and fINALLY...

if you can find this remix, it's very cool (way more so than the original in my book):

"Down In Your Valley (Dead Letter Disco Remix)" - Dead Letter Chorus

Brad Jaeger said...

I'd like to ditto Trisha's recommendation of VAST's "Touched". Quite simply it is haunting, and backed by almost a sort of tribal choir.

Smashing Pumpkins, primarily Adore or some of their b-side material tends to be on the softer, more melancholy side and would be suitable.

Marilyn Manson's "A Place in the Dirt", "Coma White", "Coma Black", "Disassociative", "The Speed of Pain" and "Fundamentally Loathsome" are all great material. The songs above that I've selected is not so much rage as it is introspective doubt.

Also, Scottish bands are a great resource. Get Mogwai's "Happy Songs for Happy People". It's intensely instrumental, but emotionally provocative.

And get David Bowie's "Outside" album. You'll know why after you listen to it ;)

The darkest I listen to would probably be Daughtry or Hoobastank. Probably not helpful. For emotional punch, I go with Richard Marx's Emotional Remains. Good luck putting together your list!

I have a difficult time writing 'dark' because that is not my personality and it's a stretch for me to try...
good luck with it and perhaps now is just not the right time? Since I teach, I can understand the pull and it's a fine line...

Thanks, guys!!! This is an awesome, impressive list of music for me to start looking for. I'm thrilled to have so many ideas for putting me in the mood of my story, but also just for some good new music that I didn't know about - that's always welcome!

Now, to hunt... :)

Everybody already gave awesome suggestions - especially Evanescence and Paramore. When I need to get to a dark place with my writing, I plug into my Bush station on Pandora. Nothing like a little Mouth and Glycerine to drag me into the dark.

Sara@CleverlyInked said...

I listen to "Haunted" by Evanescence or "Down with the Sickness" by Disturbed.

Bluestocking Mum said...

Yes, just seen someone suggested Evanescence - good choice. It's very tortured.

Classical - I would go for Gorecki every time.
Many to choose from but a personal favourite is:
Symphony No. 3 "Sorrowful Songs" - Lento e Largo

Here's a link from You tube

Incredibly powerful and haunting.
